This is a bit of an odd thought exercise. The topic of RD as the Flying Dutchman came up in a conversation with
kahvi, and I wanted to try it out. Needless to say, concrit could really help this one sit more solidly.
Set in VII. Spoilers up through Beyond A Joke. A recasting of Blue.
I will see you again, my friend.

Date: 2006-04-05 01:55 am (UTC)Oh, well done to you of course. Once again you've made the characters come alive to the point where I giggled when Rimmer was giggling and felt like crying for him at the end.
I also really enjoyed the beginning =) Very interesting hee.

"Rimmer... man... what the smeg are we doing?"
*smack* I *smack* though *smack* I *smack* told *smack* you *smack* to stop *smack* doing *smack* that!!

Date: 2006-04-05 03:31 am (UTC)Well, let's be fair to Lister - it all did happen too fast. That's one of the things I take away from the Wagner version. The captain sees Senta talking with her boy, freaks out, and splits, while Senta is running after him and saying, "Dude! You have it all wrong!"
Details!
Date: 2006-04-05 05:42 am (UTC)The Miners of Jove - inspired genius.
"when I have left this earth and this body behind, and am naught but light, we will meet again among the stars."
*happy romantic sigh* And it's truuueee!
Great Rimmer/Lister interaction. Geez, why didn't you script Blue?
Kiss details - yum. Makes me happy.
"Rimmer... man... what the smeg are we doing?"
*eyes Lister again*
Lovely, lovely...
Re: Details!
Date: 2006-04-05 06:19 am (UTC)Heh.
Aww, thanks! I was trying for something halfway between the dream and the waking of Blue. I thought Lister might be livin' somewhere around there...
Re: Details!
Date: 2006-04-05 06:24 am (UTC)...
Well, it does now, at any rate.

Date: 2006-04-05 12:50 pm (UTC)Her list of the differences between the two was becoming very detailed, and despite his randiness, Lister was half-afraid that she might finally give in and sleep with him simply to make the list comprehensive." - Hee!
And of course, the Rimmer and Lister interaction is great. The hug had been a sincere, mately gesture, while this cupping of his cheek, along with the oddly direct stare... :) :) :)
Actually, I was wondering if you'd mind answering a question that has ridiculous ramifications for the fic I've been
thinking aboutplanningarguing withwriting for what feels like years and still hasn't got anywhere? : Where do you think the planet with all of Ace's coffins around it is? - In Ace's dimension? In 'ours'? In some weird pan-dimensional rift? Argh.no subject
Date: 2006-04-05 04:06 pm (UTC)*takes notes* :D
As far as how I wanted to do this... well, given the number of lightbees and assuming a halfway decent lifespan per Ace, that's easily a few million years of Aces. So I figure the recruitment has been going on for at least that long. As for the voice in the head - just a little spiritual nonsense I felt like throwing in. Echoes of ancestors.
Well, in Last Human, we're lead to believe that the rift between the dimensions was not a stable or human-habitable place. As far as 'our' dimension or any other - well, the 'original' timeline was just a device for my fic. From what I gather from my limited knowledge of physics, all dimensions are equally 'valid,' so the planet could be in any of them. I like the idea that there's an idyllic, peaceful dimension out there somewhere where, from some fluke of nature, there is no war or evil, and that's where we find that faaabulous pink planet.
For a really eerie look at parallel universes, check out Larry Niven's All The Myriad Ways. The man is a hard-sci-fi god. *bows*

I was taking the little swirly-purple-wormhole-thing they had to travel through to follow Ace's coffin to mean they'd jumped dimensions, but wasn't sure if that was a regular jump in space or not.
Was a nice planet though. Deserves to be in a nice dimension.
*takes notes* :D *grins* I'm just a sucker for the sea really. I miss it like crazy when I'm away from home.

Date: 2006-04-05 06:41 pm (UTC)Home for me, is Torquay, a town on England's SW coast. Aside from being the birthplace of Agatha Christie and the supposed setting for Fawlty Towers, there is nothing else even remotely interesting about it. But we do have fake palm trees, quite a bit of beach (and as you may have guessed) quite a lot of sea as well. :)
Where are you from?

Date: 2006-04-05 07:05 pm (UTC)Nifty! I've always wanted to visit England. My grad school is too up in the air to do anything this year, but some year, I'd like to fly over, rent a motorbike, and do a blitz tour England, Germany, France, and time permitting, Scotland or Wales. Maybe drop in on DJ. ;) I did hike and bus through Greece in '98, and it was massively fun.
I'm from Chicago, and I still adore it. I think it's the best city I've ever lived in. I've lived there, Philly, two misguided years in Lincoln NE, Berkeley, and Seattle. I also spent some time in New York with a former boy. I've been here in Seattle since '99, and that's a long stint in one place for me. :p I love Chicago the best of all of those as a city, but I love the surroundings of Seattle the best (the natural beauty). I wish I could have both.

Date: 2006-04-05 07:30 pm (UTC)Wow, that's a lot of places. A lot of big places as well. I spend half the year in Oxford and half the year at home, and whilst Oxford is very pretty and is tiny for a city, it still doesn't seem rural enough for me. Once I've finished my degree I'll probably end up living somewhere else though - and I'm looking foward to it. Torquay can be beautiful, but there's nothing there.
I'm ashamed to say I've never really visited Scotland. Have had hundreds of family holidays to Wales so the country, on the whole, brings back rather strained memories, but it's lovely (usual caveat: when it's not raining). I've only ever been to France, Germany, Switzerland and Ireland outside of the UK, and then only briefly. God, I could have stayed forever in Switzerland - but I don't think I can quite afford it! And of course, I'd love to visit North America and Australia, but can't quite afford that either!
I'd love to go on a cruise sometime - but only because I want to live on a boat for awhile. There's nowhere I'd particularly want to go!
