Trying to write Lister/Rimmer when Rimmer is still in Trixie LaBouche's body is oddly disconcerting.
Just thought I'd share that little factoid with everyone.
*shakes head* the phrase 'his breasts' is just not right!
Edited to add: I have finished writing the fic in question, so if people want to read it, it's here.

Date: 2006-04-29 09:56 am (UTC)I hope I do get around to actually finishing a fanfic one day. I tried to respond to that challenge set by roadstergirl, I wrote 2 paragraphs and got a strange urge to listen to emo music, and never got back to it.

Date: 2006-04-29 10:54 am (UTC)There is a pressing shortage of femmeslash in RD fandom, for obvious reasons. I try not to write too many Mary Sues, but sometimes it's necessary just so that the fandom doesn't collapse under the weight of its own testosterone.
I hope you get around to finishing a fanfic someday too! It's always good to see people who are interested in writing. Maybe you can do something more with those two paragraphs?

Date: 2006-04-29 12:44 pm (UTC)Maybe...perhaps I should start with drabbles and get back it at a later stage. I always get panicky about whether things are in character.

Date: 2006-04-29 12:47 pm (UTC)Drabbles are always a good starting point.

Date: 2006-04-29 01:28 pm (UTC)It irritates me that Kochanski, a female officer in what's quite clearly 'the boys' club' world of officerhood in the Space Corps, is still portrayed as quite shallow at times. I feel that to get where she has in the clearly sexist hierarchy, she should be quite a bit tougher than she often appears. On the other hand, I suppose being stuck on Starbug with 'our' crew and then being thrown into the Brig would break down anyone's toughness, really.

Date: 2006-04-29 01:49 pm (UTC)In the Red Dwarf Omnibus Captain Hollister is changed to a woman, so it's difficult to decide exactly how gender equality works in the Red Dwarf universe. Maybe each colony has different standards, I'd imagine Io would of been very traditionalist, which would explain the Rimmer family attitudes.

Date: 2006-04-29 01:58 pm (UTC)I wonder whether that change in the Omnibus was after complaints about the complete gender imbalance in the show? I get the strong feeling that there's still a lot of sexism, probably stronger on some colonies than others. Io seems to be stuck in the past (and by that I mean our past, not just the past of the RD timeline).
Eh. I guess we just deal with it by writing more Mary Sues :-D

Date: 2006-04-29 02:16 pm (UTC)I get the feeling that Red Dwarf, in some aspects, is very much a mirror of how Rob Grant and Doug Naylor see the world. They're both English and the show has a distinctly English vibe which goes beyound the fact that most of the characters have English accents, and they're both male so female characters are written as seen through male eyes.

Date: 2006-04-29 09:14 am (UTC)I was writing the phrase "his breasts" waaaay back in 2003, luv. Body Swap, the eternally unfinished fic, remember?

Date: 2006-04-29 10:57 am (UTC)You may rest assured that Body Swap does not get forgotten easily, grasshopper.

Date: 2006-04-29 04:35 pm (UTC)The problem is that since I'm RPing Hips now, she's changed dramatically from her debut in Parole. Like, she's almost a completely different character, now. So going back and writing her as she was in Body Swap would be very, very hard for me to wrap my head around. :/
But at least now I know what she looks like. I have pretty, pretty icons for her. :D

Date: 2006-04-30 02:29 am (UTC)I'm sorry, I don't speak your crazy moon language. :O
It is so close to completion. But I go back and re-read it and it's, like, oh god I could do SO MUCH BETTER NOW. I'm sorely, sorely, SORELY tempted to just yank both Parole and BSTT and re-write both from beginning to end.

Date: 2006-04-30 04:48 am (UTC)For the luvva gawd, don't go back and rewrite them. I think they're great! I just need an ending for BSTT and I can die happy, that's all, honest.

Date: 2006-04-30 05:01 am (UTC)But, no, seriously. Hips has more depth now. The Suey McSuerson label has been torn out of her underpants. She's a PERSON, now, not just some way to toss a blonde babe at Rimmer and then write smut.
But I'll try. I really will.

Date: 2006-04-30 05:03 am (UTC)Darl, you're starting to rival ME for the WIP that's been the longest in progress. I'm only looking out for my title. Honest. Really.

Date: 2006-04-30 05:12 am (UTC)Yesterday I wrote two chapters of the Discworld/HP fic, and finished off the RD Mary Sue, and I still had time to watch two episodes of the Brittas Empire and one of Firefly.
I know you can do it. I have faith in you.

Date: 2006-04-29 09:49 am (UTC)Dave? Dave?? Are you all right? Speak to me Dave! ;))
It wasn't just the lack of Rimmer's usual broad Ionian accent that made it different, of course.
Ionian accent! :D Such a big fan of that. I've always wondered what it's like.
The ease with which they loved each other made him feel -- made him feel -- he didn't know.
Aaaww...
Masturbation scene - omgwheeenghaaahhhhawtdies!
Dervla gave him a suitably exasperated look
I know how she feels.
He didn't feel quite as pressed to have a meaningful conversation with soap.
Sex... Am unable to articulate word... Things about sex... Sex... Aaaah!
I like your universe. ;)

Date: 2006-04-29 11:00 am (UTC)I like my universe too. That fic is part of the Omni-zone series, actually, in which many, many fandoms collide and the Red Dwarf Slash Society make guest appearances. It's a huge piece of self-indulgence, really, but since when was self-indulgence a bad thing?
Glad you liked it :-D

Date: 2006-04-29 05:00 pm (UTC)That was quite sweet. I actually think I liked the mutual masturbation scene the best.
