Title: That Time of Year
Rating: Light PG-13
Summary: Time for those horrid little annual check-ups – but when you have Lister as a boyfriend, there’s no way he’ll simply let you get away with it. CxL
Disclaimer: Sure as heck isn’t mine.
Warnings: Slightly, though not overly, sexy in places and of course, contains a bit of slash.
That Time of Year
“I really hate these things, you know, bud. I don’t relish them.” Cat glanced over his shoulder at Lister as the human gestured him down to the medical-bay. Lister smiled and put a hand on his shoulder.
“Look, man, you’re not the only one who has to go through it, we both have to have these checkups.”
“They’re not checkups, they’re attempted murder!” Cat looked around at him again as they continued walking.
“Look, we’re organic, we’re easily liable to diseases floatin’ around in space – come back here, man, you’re walkin’ right past it!” Lister regarded Cat with a half-stern, half-amused expression as the Cat turned, sighed at his failed attempt to escape by hurrying past the medi-bay door, and came to stand outside it, folding his arms somewhat stubbornly. Lister put his finger on the lock and jabbed in the code to the door. It slid open behind Cat and Lister jabbed his thumb in the direction in the open entrance.
“In.”
Another sigh, and then Cat turned and reluctantly walked into the medi-bay, which was empty except for Kryten, who was arranging various medical equipment in the corner. On hearing them enter, he glanced up and gave a suitably surprised, “Oh! Hello, sirs!”
“Hey Kryts, Cat’s here for his annual check-up, and this time, he’s gonna behave himself.” Lister gave Cat a look, and the feline rolled his eyes to the ceiling. Kryten smiled slightly at the reassurance.
“Thankyou sir. I just hope Mr. Cat doesn’t – well, we all remember last time. I think that’s the first time I’ve ever cleared a crowd of Skutters in a single leap, not to mention the burns on the G-deck wall… Anyway, I need to go and fetch some more equipment – won’t take me five minutes. If you’d just be so kind as to take off your jacket and shirt, Mr. Cat sir, and we can get started.” Another nod, and the mechanoid left the medi-bay.
Cat shuffled nervously on the spot, looking around the place. His eyes were set in a slight frown, and he was obviously inspecting all the possible tools that Kryten could use to carry out his ‘check-ups.’ Resignedly, he then removed his jacket, saying to Lister over his shoulder, “I really hate this time of year.”
Lister came up behind him to retrieve the jacket. “Yeah, you said that six months ago. And six months before that, and six months before that…” He laughed slightly as he put the jacket on the chair in the corner and Cat began to unbutton his shirt underneath. Peeling it off, he allowed Lister to take it away from him and put it on top of the jacket. Then the human came back over, and gestured Cat into the patient’s chair. Cat sat on the very edge as Lister went around the back and started to massage his shoulders.
“Wow, you’re really tense, man.”
“I wonder why,” Cat snapped dryly and bitterly. Lister’s only response was to press his fingers into the feline’s shoulder muscles harder. Cat looked around the room, hugging himself slightly, goosebumps erupting on his skin from the slight chill of the room. Lister could only run a hand down the Cat’s left arm sympathetically. He did have a point, he admitted to himself, these tests weren’t exactly his idea of spending a Tuesday afternoon. It was an added insult that Rimmer, being a hologram didn’t have to have these tests – still, he and Cat had taken revenge on his gloating by hiding his secret photographs of Yvonne McGruder.
Lister shook his head yet again, returning to his massage of Cat’s skin. The feline had his arms folded across his torso so Lister couldn’t really see many of his six nipples. He felt the goosebumps underneath his fingers and tenderly ran three fingers though Cat’s black hair, hoping to calm his all-too-apparent nerves before Kryten came back and the feline snapped exactly like he had last time. He bit his lip, remembering the underlined humour of that incident; while it had been quite terrifying at the time, it retrospect it made the human want to laugh out loud. That was definitely his Cat, through and through.
“What’re you smiling at?” Glancing up at him, Cat raised his eyebrows somewhat dangerously. Covering his mouth with one hand, Lister cleared his throat and tried to maintain a straight face.
“Nothin’; it’s alright.”
Obviously deciding not to pursue it, Cat glanced once again at the door. “I wish Kryten’d hurry up.”
“He’ll be here.” Lister stopped his massaging and simply kept his hands on Cat’s shoulders. “Just relax, and keep a stiff upper lip.”
“Easy for you to say.” Lister gave the Cat another ‘look’ and the feline added grudgingly, “But I guess you’re only tryin’ to help.”
Lister gave an affectionate smile and his thumbs rubbed the bare nape of Cat’s neck as they heard Kryten’s footsteps outside. “Well, here he is now.” He bent over the chair, kissed Cat between his left ear and cheek and quickly straightened up as the mechanoid returned to the room, a first-aid kit in hand. Cat’s eyes flickered to it for a second, and Lister decided that at this point, it would be best to place his trust in him and leave the room.
“Well, Kryters, he’s all yours. I’ll see you later,” Lister added to Cat, before scurrying quickly out of the door. Cat didn’t even bother glaring after him, for his eyes were fixed on the syringe that Kryten was preparing, almost certainly for him. He breathed slightly easier though, when Kryten put the syringe down and turned around with a clipboard in hand.
“Right, sir. Let’s start with your height and weight.”
*
Lister glanced up from his magazine as Holly appeared on the screen in his quarters.
“Dave, Kryten would like to see you for your check-up in the medi-bay.”
Lister raised his eyebrows slightly, put the magazine down, and stood up. “OK, thanks, Hol. I wonder how Cat got on.” On receiving no reply, he turned around and saw that Holly had disappeared from the monitor. He glanced at it nervously – that couldn’t be a good sign.
Five minutes later, when Lister arrived back at the medi-bay, Kryten greeted him with a cheerful smile. Too cheerful, the human thought.
“So, er, Kryten…” He sat in the patient’s chair and began to unbutton his shirt. “How did it all go with Cat? OK?”
“I can safely say that I was not pursued across half the ship this time around, sir.” The mechanoid kept his smile firmly in place. Lister’s frown deepened as he took his shirt off.
“So – it went alright then, yeah?”
“Perfectly, sir. Absolutely peachy.” The mechanoid then turned away to fetch his clipboard and Lister saw, on his back, four deep grey scratches that stood out starkly against Kryten’s black torso.
Lister rested his head in his hands and gave a loud groan.
*
Half an hour later, emerging from the medi-bay, Lister made for his sleeping-quarters, feeling pleasantly drowsy from some of the syringes that Kryten had given him. Stopping in the door of his cabin, the first thing he saw was Cat dozing in Rimmer’s bunk and he smiled sleepily. Then he clambered up onto his own bunk and lay there, ready for an hour’s sleep to settle the protective drugs he had been given, before he heard a shuffling below. He watched as Cat clambered up the ladder and gently lay down on top of him, cuddling sleepily into his chest.
“I saw Kryten’s back,” Lister mumbled, glancing down at him. Cat cleared his throat and dug deeper into the human’s chest, obviously still under the effect of the drugs. In no mood to argue, Lister put his head back against the pillow and was soon asleep.
