I could never have Rimmer as FWB. *shakes head* Listy, however, most definitely =0)

Aye ... Yes. I agree there. I don't think you could have a fling with Rimmer for fear of hurting the poor man. But he's a long term bloke, definitely. Someone to work on.

For a shag every so often, it'd be Lister *nod*. Unless of course he is shagging Mr Rimmer. Then I won't push it :)

Maybe push it in order to get a peek ;-)

Wasn't I just here last night? Looks like my journal on a rather kinky day ...

Ah, that I could answer easily. And yes, I think the winner is pretty certain. The one thing that always tells me this series is written by men, is that they really think Rimmer would have problems getting laid ;-)

It's kinda funny - Rimmer, personality-wise, reminds me strongly of two other fictional sticks-in-the-mud; Frank Burns of MASH and Steven Hauk of Good Morning, Vietnam - and those two are not beset by fangirls in the same way. I love all three on the interesting-slime-character level (especially Hauk; Bruno Kirby did a fantastic job with him, as per the general standard of acting in that movie), but those two are not beset with fangirls in the way Rimmer is. I think it's Mr. Barrie. [livejournal.com profile] kahvi and I have discussed his Aceish qualities. He does make even confirmed heterosexuals very interested.

It is without doubt Mr. Barrie. I agree Frank Burns having a similar personality, but he just isn't CUTE ::g::
It is actually quite a feat to take this neurotic gittish character and make him still vulnerable enough that you feel sorry for him even in his worst moments.
I can't stand Ace, so I have problems finding him attractive, but you gotta love Chris in that outfit.

Date: 2006-08-08 08:28 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] roadstergal.livejournal.com
Yes, that's why I made Ace my unrequited crush - I'll admire him from afar, thanks. ;)

Additional: Frank Burns is in a way proof that gits can get laid. There is plenty of woman who will take the git to bed if he is attractive (and clean, Lister!), and those who will love the fact that they have the upper hand (like Hotlips), or will see him as a rehabilitation project, women tend to like that. Holoship really supports that - someone capable of taking initiative grabs him immediately.
But it is likely that men writing will think that he cannot get women, while not realising that a lot of women will not like a type like Ace at all, that is a type other men admire.

Date: 2006-08-08 08:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] roadstergal.livejournal.com
True. RD was indeed written from a male perspective. Of course, there are plenty of women who see the "will not settle down" Ace type as the challenge to rehabilitate. M'self, I dunno how much Risk diary and Christian rock music I could stand in a sexual partner. :p

But it wouldnt stop you from sleeping with him until you tired of it, would it? So "Rimmer only getting it once" is not believable from a womans standpoint.

I have strong feelings about breath and BO. Up until VII, I'd have problems with Lister. He cleans up in VII and VIII, for no reason that is explained in the show.

I'd go for Spanners, though. Or Rimmer's first officer in the mirror universe - although he's shagging Rimmer, so he's not free.

From: [identity profile] eastpath.livejournal.com
I figured he cleaned up because of the woman, and the possibility of sex. And that if he was as he had been, she'd not be interested...

Date: 2006-08-08 07:56 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] roadstergal.livejournal.com
That's the thing, though - he cleaned up before Oroborous, somewhere between OOT and Tikka. (Of course, I see that as slashy. Y'all are shocked by that, I know. :p)

From: [identity profile] roadstergal.livejournal.com
I had wondered about that, but stumbled at trying to make a link between slobbiness and being only a brain. I'm much better at thinking of creative ways to hook random plot points to slash. :) I think OOT and Rimmerworld made huge globs of change to Rimmer's personality, tho.

Would be more like how completely unprincipled and uncaring they had all become, and really behaving like overgrown, greedy children - if you want it its ok. So Lister decided it was time to grow up, and better personal habits just came a long on the side.
What is more interesting is the almost mind-boggling influence it had on Rimmer - he was suddenly willing to die for something! Although a lot happened before in season VI probably preparing the grounds for it. I guess self-preservation is one thing, but deep down Rimmer sees himself as a man with principles.

Man... so need to get the DVD's so I can watch all those later episodes and pull all that slashy goodness into my brain :)

The DVDs are really worth it - the interviews and other bonus content only add to the slashy goodness. The cast commentary on I is megaslashy. I and V have the best commentary, IMO, but I is the naughtiest.

*looks at thread* I need to shut up.

I always felt that the personal hygiene thing was exaggerated (by Rimmer, mostly, just as Lister exaggerated Rimmer's neurosies. Eating his food in alphabetical order, anyone?), which I'm sure is visible in my fic. Your Lister is so much scruffier than mine. ;)

Date: 2006-08-08 08:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] roadstergal.livejournal.com
No doubt, and I also think Lister exaggerated it purposely to disgust Rimmer "That's why I never buy any soap or deodorant or socks or anything like that, you know," and I've put that in fics, too. Part of it is also just my own perspective, though, which I think is Rimmerene - I mean, even a normal level of scruffiness can get to me. *meep* I have yet to meet an unpartnered male with a shower curtain I could deal with. (I've known some divorcees and widowers with bathrooms I can live with, but I think they've been influenced.)

Date: 2006-08-08 08:43 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kahvi.livejournal.com
Yeah, that's a good point; if you don't like something, it tends to be all the more visible. It probably exaggerates itself in Rimmer's mind, just as Rimmer's faults exaggerate themselves in Lister's.

Um... If you ever come to visit our place, make sure to give warning a few months in advance. Rimmerine [livejournal.com profile] cobos may be, but not when it come to cleaning. Hehehe...

Date: 2006-08-08 08:46 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] roadstergal.livejournal.com
Yep. I think the things that frustrate both of them would be foremost in their minds - Lister's slobbiness to Rimmer, and Rimmer's continual self-interest-filling cowardice for Lister. :p I just feel like that is maddeningly frustrating for Lister, and that feeling permeates the show, especially in V and VI. Then Rimmer starts to change more...

Oh, I'm good with visiting folk. But when I start dating someone, I start thinking, "Could I visit this bathroom every morning?" :p
