Oh - they're pushed back in time by paradox to before they picked up the time drive when they're killed by their future selves. In Tikka, Lister picks up the drive again to get his curry, but I thought that maybe the idea that Rimmer could turn into a person that would happily kill him was eating at him. Picking up the time-drive and not seeing their future selves come back might be some indication to him that they turned out differently, perhaps even better. :p We never see what happens to the time-drive, and he must have had it in Oroborous...
But it's a different time-drive, isn't it? Because they blew up the old one... no, they blew up the whole ship, thereby exterminating future self, thereby getting present self back, but then the time drive was different as well at future self, or rather future self never encountered the problem to need to come back for help... but of course SMAC ruined everything, because Rimmer is no longer with them, so this was probably an alternative future, or maybe they are an alternative present.. never mind, my head is gonna explode like the camera if I try this any further... Now this was what I didn't understand: "So, that was one of the points of this little exercise, was it? To see if I would come back in time and try to kill all of us again?" What exercise?
Oh - going and getting the time-drive again after OOT.
It's enough to give you a headache. I wanted to also imply that this would be a driving force behind Stoke - as you said, it's all changed a bit, so is the future selves not-returning really a sign that everything turns out OK? Then the opportunity arises to make sure at lest one of them ends up a hero...

"What is the problem, bud? Your face is lookin' longer than my good bits these days."
Perfect.
