Fics You'd Like To See Written

But for whatever reason don't feel capable of writing yourself?   I'm sure we all have some, but the one I'm personally thinking of right now is one where Lister and Rimmer are in an established relationship but something isn't quite right.  It turns out that Rimmer wants Lister to dom him.  Although initially scared at the thought, Lister tries because he wants to make his lover happy.

It just seems to me that the guilt he would experience at taking pleasure in dominating someone - even if it was only pleasure at doing what Rimmer wanted - would be fascinating to explore.  Also the fact that Rimmer is a hard-light hologram and therefore much tougher than a human being - would that reassure Lister or scare the smeg out of him?

I'm not imagining anything particularly hardcore; it could be scenarios like orgasm denial.  What I imagine Lister would find disturbing is the whole concept of having that much power over someone.

I suppose it's my perception of Lister which makes me think he'd be conflicted about it. I imagine him being OK with milder stuff such as orgasm denial and spanking, but things like whipping and humiliation I can see him having more trouble with and Rimmer seems to me to be quite likely to be interested in those.

I would also like to see that, especially as Jim and Bexley would be there too. It would be nice to see how that family turned out. :)

Maybe when people imagine Lister in a darker way, they're taking some inspiration from the parallel universe Lister from Last Human? If my recollection is correct, that version of Lister was adopted by a different family, and it led to him essentially becoming a sociopath. It's hard to think of our soppy, sentimental, romantic Listy having violent or darker tendencies in him, but as we saw in Demons and Angels, the potential is there.

We all have darker sides to our nature that we either control, or suppress, or that we aren't even very aware of since they weren't nurtured in us as we grew up. I had a thought one day about what my own Low might be like, and it wasn't a pleasant thing to think of.

I really wish they'd included Lister's pregnancy and the birth of Jim and Bexley on the show. I think because we never actually SAW it happen, I have a hard time being invested in the boys and what happened to them. Also probably because Lister never, ever mentions them, except for the off-handed, "I've given birth to twins," line in Demons and Angels. As someone who's given birth, it's not something you easily forget, and having to give up your kids afterward and never see them again? Yeah, that would fuck Lister up, that would fuck him up a LOT. It irritates me that it's just sort of made into a non-event.

I don't know if it's because he's a man that they try to make him giving birth to two babies, and then having to give them up, something that doesn't effect him at all. More probably it's just because they decided the story-line really wouldn't work for the format of the show, and they just wanted to sweep it under the carpet and ignore it. Still, it irritates me. You don't just give birth to twins, have them grow into teenagers overnight, and have to give them up and never see them again without having some sadness about it.

They probably just should never have written the, "Lister gets himself knocked up" story in the first place. ;-)

I imagine they probably are inspired by "LH" Lister. It's odd that he doesn't particularly bother me - I think it's because I read that book before I was as emotionally invested in Lister's character as I am now. Also, he fits the "evil twin" trope in media which we're all accustomed to.

It fucks me up far more if it's our adorable Listy realising he has darker tendencies. I'm trying to choose my words carefully here as I realise Doms aren't the same thing as sociopaths. I think it's because I'm so vanilla that I find it hard to get into the mindset of a Dom. We don't seem to have any who are writing RD fics. ;)

You're right that the whole Jim and Bexley thing shouldn't have just been brushed aside as it ended up being. http://kms726.livejournal.com/profile has written a lot of fics about what she thinks happened in between Series 2 and 3.

Rob and Doug basically admitted that they dropped the storyline because they didn't want babies around and I can kind of see their point but they could definitely have handled it a lot better.

I thought they said they couldn't think of anyway of making it not sexist? But then, just sweeping the babies into another universe and pretending they didn't exist was sort sexist. In that the kids were the mother's problem, even when the mother was the father!

I'd love to read a fic about Deb and Arlene dealing with having the kids. Anyone know if there are any? I had an idea in which the kids got sent back to the other universe, and then they get de-aged somehow, so we could have all the missing baby scenes, only with Deb and Arlene. I couldn't write it myself though, as I literally know NOTHING about babies.

Different reasons have been given for dropping "Dad" - originally it was that the script was turning out sexist and homophobic but the script as performed by Chris on the "Bodysnatcher Collection" isn't really. On the Series 2 doc on the same DVD, Rob and Doug say that it was more that Rob wasn't a father at the time and just wasn't interested in the whole set-up. Obviously Doug couldn't write it by himself as they were very much a team at that stage.

You're right about the unfortunate implications of sending them to Deb but to be fair, it was to save their lives and at least they were adults so she didn't get lumbered with the nappy changing etc.

I have an unfinished one, but it's with the boys as 18 year olds as specified in "Backwards". Technically they're adults but they're as innocent as you'd expect having only been alive for 3 days. http://archiveofourown.org/works/650734
