A post-Stoke Me A Clipper fic. Spoilers up through there.
Concrit always appreciated, especially in this one for voice and pacing. I find it so much easier to write Rimmer as smug bastard/git, and I'm never quite sure how to evolve his voice as Ace.
My name is Arnold, you batty machine.

I love the line about the unrequited love of an electronic lifeform, and the part about getting through Ace's catchphrase without giggling :D
The ending was incredibly moving but at the same time rather frightning, I think it was the thought that all those Rimmers had to leave absolutely everything behind, icluding all those Listers :(

Date: 2006-04-30 05:34 pm (UTC)I have strong feelings about SMAC as an episode. Yes, I know it was just because Chris was leaving, but the way it fit into the show just seemed to me to be horribly, horribly sad. Between VI and VII, Rimmer and Lister really seemed to hit an affection and understanding well beyond what they had hit before, and it seemed that Rimmer left to be Ace - and to be alone! - just as he and Lister were finally getting somewhere lovely.
And tangentially, I think it's interesting that the video diary in Blue was made by Kryten in his jealousbitch phase. I don't think he would be any happier about the idea of Lister kissing Rimmer than the idea of Lister kissing Kochanski. I've had a bunny for a while from Kryten's POV, where he's desperately trying to find something to turn Lister off, and he culls the nasty bits from Rimmer's diary - pointedly not putting in some other bits...

Date: 2006-05-06 06:44 am (UTC)I feel that the characters in Red Dwarf are never really allowed to be happy, but it's a real shame Rimmer and Lister didn't have the chance to take a shot. I'm actually really curious to know where their relationship could have gone if Ace hadn't got a shot through the light-bee on War World.
Oooo, are you going to make that into a fic? The "other bits" part interests me.

The way out of his life, into one where the pieces would fall into place and form a more pleasing picture.
Lovely sentence.
"It's not Beryl. It's her sister, Carbuncle."
*snigger*
Wonderful (well, horrible, but you see what I mean) imagery of the explosion, and Rimmer's second death.
Who was he to mock the unrequited affection of an electronic lifeform?
Good one.
The spear, however, hit something that sent an unusual electrical crackle through his body.
Aaah! Fuck, no! *gets rather too involved with this*
"Oh, far be it from me to get in the way of two consenting adults in the mood for a little salami-dip."
You go, Arn.
...
*glares at you* *goes away and curls up into a ball, thinking furiously*
Erm... That means it was good. But yes.
Well, you can't expect me not to try...

YES! Gotcha! There's the angle! *grins widely and keeps writing*

Date: 2006-04-30 05:38 pm (UTC)I remember reading The Adventure Of The Blue Carbuncle way back when, and thinking "What the hell?" I had to look it up to realize it was a gemstone once...
Yes, the second death. Again, something in the show that struck me as horribly sad, and was not gone into by the writers.
That ship's computer also struck me as a little horrifying. She coos over every Ace, but she appears to coo over every Ace identically, paying no mind to the fact that they're dying and being replaced.
Oh, we know every Arn wants every Lister in every dimension - and it must have just killed this one (so to speak) to see the Lister in his dimension pining after Ace. :p

Date: 2006-04-30 05:49 pm (UTC)I felt quite sorry for this Lister too, I'm not sure why. Well, there's the fact that Ace basically took advantage of him. :/
Guh - I'm trying to make my response-story (so to speak) balance between too depressing and too sappy. It did start out as "Too Much" and ended up as "Home", so I think it's going in the right direction. Might post soon, because I need to get it out of my system!

Date: 2006-04-30 11:25 pm (UTC)But I mentioned that I was thinking about Brothers In Arms when I wrote it -
Now the sun's gone to hell
And the moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms
