This is just so wonderfully done. I can tell you know Rimmer so well, to make - well, everything - come through so wonderfully even from Lister's POV.

Ja, VIII was bittersweet. On the one hand, Lister has Rimmer back. On the other hand, it's not his Rimmer. On the third hand, it's not his Rimmer because it hasn't had the experiences - and it is someone he could love, I think, if this Rimmer had a few life-changing experiences himself. I mean, he's a bastard, true, but the mere fact that holo-Rimmer could become better means that resurrected-Rimmer could, too - given the chance.

Now that would be a love triangle.

Well, yes, exactly. He does have the potential, but he is a different person. And holo-Rimmer is still out there. Lister would feel quite strongly about that. Frankly, I don't see Lister getting involved with ressurected-Rimmer under any circumstances, except the one you've outlined here. He'd feel it was some sort of betrayal.

In my mind, it all works out in the end, though. :)

Ja, that's another thing I think Lister would be thinking of. Is Arn still alive? Or is he off circling that planet in pieces? Or did he decide not to pass on the flame and rip another Rimmer away from his Lister? In any case, does Lister think he's lost Arn altogether by his own action - and if so, would he consider an improved-live-Rimmer a chance to do the right thing, for both of them? Or would he rather wait for holo-Rimmer, knowing that it may well be in vain, because that's the right thing?

Of course, he is an optimist at his core. I think, if pressed, he'd admit he thinks his Arn will come back to him. But of course, then there's this Rimmer to consider. He'd want to do right by him too. Personally, I think he should set him up with Kochanski. Slap some sense into the woman.

Ah, there's a philosophical point. Is holo-Rimmer alive? I think he is, at least as much as Kryten is; even if he only has simulations of emotions, that's good enough for me. So it's a matter of Rimmer-with-much-experience-and-much-time-with-Lister being a better person than he was to start, which I think is cool. But now we're in a position where Lister tossed holo-Rimmer away, and he's saddled, now, with this Rimmer who is not everything holo-Rimmer became to him. Karma's a bitch!

Still, it's all true. Resurrected!Rimmer sucks compared to Holo!Rimmer. They're just not the same guy and it's rather telling.

But as said above, there are so many places to go from here. There's the idea that this is karma getting him back for what he did to holo-Rimmer in Stoke. There's the thought that this Rimmer does indeed have the potential to become more, because holo-Rimmer did. And so on. But yes, it's not the same man!
