I know some of you already know about the
Archive Of Our Own fanworks archive, but I wanted to pimp the heck out of it anyway, because I've been uploading
all my old fic to it over the last week or so and have been discovering many features that make is shiny and awesome, such as:
- A tagging system similar to the entry tagging here on LJ
- The ability to backdate your works so the publication date is when you wrote them rather than when you uploaded them (LOVING this one; stunned that Floor 13 is TEN YEARS OLD!)
- The ability to organise your works into a series
- The ability to import works from other sites online, including the Pit of Voles (fanfiction.net)
- NC-17 works and RPF are allowed, unlike the Pit
- It's not the Pit. 'Nuff said.
As well as these things for ease of posting, AO3 makes it possible to search by tags, fandom, characters, author, rating, you name it. It has an easy to understand rating/warning system. You can view fics chapter by chapter or as one long page. It's not the Pit. (I'm not at all irritated about being banned from there without warning or getting to appeal the ban, no, really.)
AO3 is still in beta, but it's already working extremely well. The main hitch I've seen so far is a minor issue with chapter navigation while editing, and that only matters if you're going back and forth between chapters while editing. Also, as yet it doesn't have a fanart or fanvid section, but that is in the plan. There are already quite a few
Red Dwarf fics up, yay!
I absolutely still want people to post their works here, of course. But I'd love it if people would at least consider archiving their old and new works there, particularly so that we can preserve people's older works that may have become forgotten -- I'm sure we've all had a fic or author niggling at our memory at some point and been unable to find it.
Hope to see y'all over there!
