Keep lj-cutting and spoiler warning at least til a month after the episodes air. This should be ample time for delayed international broadcasts (for example I have no idea when it's airing in Australia), but if it isn't we may have to extend the length of time we keep stuff behind a cut.

You guys have all been absolutely fantastic about spoilers so far, by the way; kudos to you all!

As regards [livejournal.com profile] janamelie's suggestion about sticky posts at the top of the comm, unfortunately it's not possible to do that pre-dating sort of sticky post on a community. However, what we can do is have an official episode discussion post as each ep airs, and I can add those links to the sidebar and the profile page, plus make a new tag for them by episode title.

I was just over on the Yahoo Group doing some maintenance (cleaned out some bouncing members, hee hee), and realised that we are less than a month away from our tenth birthday.

The Red Dwarf Slash Society started out as four people back in July 2001, founded by yours truly under whatever name it was I was using at the time. The Y!G has quietened down significantly since its heyday, but thanks to [livejournal.com profile] fiareynne made the jump to LJ. So basically it will have its tenth birthday on July 6th.

Should we commemorate this by having some sort of fic challenge? Greatest hits fic recs? Gratuitous kink meme link?

I love you all so so so much, seriously, this fandom is my baby and I can't believe I've been in it for so long!

One of the other things I'm trying to do is make the tags consistent. We've never had rules about tagging, so some people do and some people don't and some people tag one way and some people tag another and the oldest posts aren't tagged because they were made prior to the existence of tags. So from now on, here's what'd be good for people to do for tags:

Author names: author: username OR preferred pen name
Artist names: artist: username OR preferred pen name
Art styles: art: icons OR banners OR wallpaper (or other art style we don't have a tag for yet)
Pairing: pairing: rimmer/lister or whosoever it might be. I recognise and bow to the inevitability that we will have both pairing: rimmer/lister and pairing: lister/rimmer as options. You get that. I just want to make it a bit more consistent than those two AND 'lister/rimmer' AND 'l/r' and whatever else.
Rating: rating: nc-17
For crossovers, add fandom: whatever the fandom name is

There are a lot of other things that need to be fiddled with tag-wise, but if we could bear those basic guidelines in mind and I'll work on putting together a full list of tags; at the moment there are a bunch of tags that need playing with to be useful, and a bunch of posts that need tagging, so it's going to take a while. I don't want to be all whipcracky, I just want to make the most of the tag system.

Edit: Following the suggestion from [livejournal.com profile] debris_k below, I am turning off new tag adding. If you need to add a new tag to your entry (e.g. an author tag if you don't have one already, a character tag for a character who's not listed, and so on), please tag your post with tag request and put the tags you're requesting at the bottom of your post, and I will create the tags for you.

Dear everyone,

We haven't done awards in this fandom since 2004. This is a Bad Thing, and is largely my fault due to the fact that I keep looking at the volume of fic each year and going WAH I don't want to try and categorise that.

Do people fancy doing awards? What I can do is collate a list of fics from each year, starting with 2009 and working back, and I can sort them by categories and then put up a shedload of polls. In the past we've only had very broad categories for fics (like, I think the most diverse we got was splitting them into 'short' and 'long' fics), but now that we have a much higher volume of fics than back in the early 2000s, I think some more categories are in order.

My ideas:
* Best Angst
* Best Hurt/Comfort
* Best Fluff
* Best New Author (for an author whose first fic is posted during whatever year we're polling)
* Best Smut
* Best Gestalt (for authors who write in pairs/teams)

What I would like from you lovely people:

* An indication as to whether this is even a good idea
* Category ideas
* Someone to volunteer to do banners, because I used to do them and they were utterly shite
* Any ideas or input you have as to how to best run this, as again, I haven't done this since 2004 and the fandom was much smaller then

Love you guys!

'Attention, all Asteroid personnel. We're back in business. Or at least it'd be shiny if we were back in business. Anyone who's interested, report for duty.'

'Look out, fandom, the fen are coming home. Message ends.'

In other words, I'm opening a LiveJournal community for RD fandom members, whether you have been a part of the Omni-zone shenanigans before or not, to write collab fic, do some kind of RP, or whatever floats your spaceship. The community intro is here so feel free to jump in and comment, or make your own community post, or whatever you fancy. The premise is that anyone who wants to is returning to the Asteroid, which hasn't been used since 2004.

Previous Omni-zone stories are archived at AO3.

I do apologise to those of you who will see this more than once, since I'm crossposting it to the RDHS and RDSS as well.

Maybe I've been RPing too much lately ([livejournal.com profile] capeandcowl, superhero AU, we have a Rimmer and a Lister but could use other RD characters if anyone's up for it), but I had this mad idea on the way to the train station this morning and wondered what people thought.

Basically, we could have an RD RP on LJ. 'But Lauren!' I hear you say. 'There are only five really main-main characters! This would be no fun for those people who don't call dibs and get stuck being Hollister or Ackerman?'

Ah ah. Wait.

Here's the idea: a multiAU. Meaning set on the Dwarf (exactly when IDK, but probably post-BTE), but with alternate versions of the characters from different times, dimensions and seasons.

What the smeg?

Let me give an example. If I put my hand up and said 'I'll play season six Lister' (which I so will be if this goes ahead), and someone else wants to play Lister, they don't have to pick someone else altogether. Instead, they can pick up Lister from one of the other seven seasons, or from an alternate dimension. So basically there'd be a minimum of eight versions of each character available -- Kryten and Kochanski would be seven and three respectively (I think) due to being in fewer seasons. You pick your character and season, and then it's up to you exactly when in that season they come from, and you give details in your app (which would be by comment to the community).

Does this make any sense, and is anyone interested? Let me know! Call me insane! If I get enough expressions of interest (i.e. more than just me), I'll start nutting it out, but ideas in comments would also be nifty.

I know some of you already know about the Archive Of Our Own fanworks archive, but I wanted to pimp the heck out of it anyway, because I've been uploading all my old fic to it over the last week or so and have been discovering many features that make is shiny and awesome, such as:
  • A tagging system similar to the entry tagging here on LJ
  • The ability to backdate your works so the publication date is when you wrote them rather than when you uploaded them (LOVING this one; stunned that Floor 13 is TEN YEARS OLD!)
  • The ability to organise your works into a series
  • The ability to import works from other sites online, including the Pit of Voles (fanfiction.net)
  • NC-17 works and RPF are allowed, unlike the Pit
  • It's not the Pit. 'Nuff said.

As well as these things for ease of posting, AO3 makes it possible to search by tags, fandom, characters, author, rating, you name it. It has an easy to understand rating/warning system. You can view fics chapter by chapter or as one long page. It's not the Pit. (I'm not at all irritated about being banned from there without warning or getting to appeal the ban, no, really.)

AO3 is still in beta, but it's already working extremely well. The main hitch I've seen so far is a minor issue with chapter navigation while editing, and that only matters if you're going back and forth between chapters while editing. Also, as yet it doesn't have a fanart or fanvid section, but that is in the plan. There are already quite a few Red Dwarf fics up, yay!

I absolutely still want people to post their works here, of course. But I'd love it if people would at least consider archiving their old and new works there, particularly so that we can preserve people's older works that may have become forgotten -- I'm sure we've all had a fic or author niggling at our memory at some point and been unable to find it.

Hope to see y'all over there!

Y'all are already doing a great job of cutting spoilers, so I guess all I can say as we get to the final countdown is keep it up! I've always loved how much respect this fandom has for each other when it comes to, well, pretty much everything, and it's great that people are being so good about keeping spoilers behind cuts, especially because we have a lot of members from a lot of different countries and we're not all necessarily going to be able to see the new eps straight away (I don't even know if/when they're going to be airing in Australia *grinds teeth*).

So, if everyone can keep cutting spoilers and when the fics start rolling out with new ep spoilers, cutting and marking those as well would be splendid. Thank you all muchly!
